How we work

A process built for momentum

Low ceremony, high output. You always know what's shipping next and why.

  1. 01

    Discover

We pressure-test the idea, map the users, and define the smallest thing worth building. You leave with a plan, not a proposal.

  2. 02

    Design

Flows, prototypes, and a design system that makes the product feel real before a line of production code ships.

  3. 03

    Build

Weekly releases in your stack. You see working software every Friday and steer with real feedback, not guesses.

  4. 04

    Scale

We harden, instrument, and document the system — then hand off cleanly, or stay embedded. It runs without us.

FAQ

Questions we hear a lot

Straight answers on cost, timelines, and how we work — the things worth knowing before you reach out.

What does a software development company do?
A software development company designs, builds, and maintains custom software — web platforms, mobile apps, SaaS products, and AI systems — for businesses that need something off-the-shelf tools can't provide. A good one covers the whole path: discovery to pressure-test the idea and scope it, design, engineering, testing, and deployment, then ongoing maintenance. At Digital Utopia, one senior team handles all of that end to end, so nothing is lost in handoffs between a strategy shop, a design agency, and a dev shop.
How much does custom software development cost?
It depends on scope, but as orientation: a focused MVP typically runs $30,000–$90,000, a mid-sized platform $80,000–$250,000, and enterprise systems $250,000 and up, delivered in phases. The biggest drivers are the number of distinct workflows, the integrations with systems you already run, and the compliance bar. The biggest cost lever you control is scope discipline — building the highest-value slice first and letting real usage guide the rest. Budget roughly 15–25% of the build cost per year for maintenance, since software is a living asset, not a one-time purchase.
How long does it take to build software?
A discovery phase is usually 1–3 weeks, an MVP ships in 6–12 weeks, a full product or SaaS takes 3–6 months to a strong first release, and enterprise systems run 6–18 months delivered in phases. Good teams ship working software continuously — you should see real, usable output every couple of weeks and steer with it, rather than waiting for one big reveal at the deadline. Most delay comes from shifting scope and slow decisions, not from engineering, so clear priorities and a decisive point of contact are what keep a project on schedule.
Do you build AI, SaaS, and mobile apps?
Yes — custom AI systems and LLM applications (including generative AI features and AI agents), multi-tenant SaaS products from MVP to scale, and native and cross-platform mobile apps in React Native and Flutter, alongside web platforms and enterprise software. It's one senior team across all of it, which matters when a product spans several of these — an AI feature inside a SaaS with a mobile app shouldn't mean coordinating three separate vendors.
Will we own the code you build?
Yes, outright — the code and the IP are yours. We deliver clean, documented, typed code and infrastructure with no lock-in, so you're never dependent on us to keep the software running. A good partner is comfortable with you understanding, auditing, and eventually maintaining what they built, whether that's with an in-house team later or another partner. Hostage code that only the original builder can touch is a red flag, not a business model.
How do you work with clients during a project?
Remotely and closely. We work in short cycles with weekly demos of working software rather than status reports, so you steer with real progress. Engineers talk to you directly instead of through an account-management layer, and we optimise for written clarity so decisions are recorded and nothing gets lost. You get direct access to the people building your product, and honest pushback when we think there's a better path.
Where is Digital Utopia based, and do you work remotely?
We're a remote-first software development company with an office in Bucharest, Romania, working across European and U.S. time zones with a few hours of deliberate daily overlap. Remote-first is how the company was built rather than a conversion — so collaboration, code review, and communication are designed around a distributed team, not retrofitted onto one.
